I Heard No More (A Soldier's Monologue)
Watched a father and daughter play I leaned so low through the barricade I spied on them but the eyes soon fell on mine “Pirate” the child pointed out, I then bent so low but it was too late The door shut down and I heard no more Watched a father and daughter play I then glanced on, at the starry sky As a cold wind blew and froze me once then came another and froze me twice Once or twice a hand peeped through And then the door shut down and I heard no more I heard no more. I heard no more. I wish I could hear many many more But alas! all I could hear was the whispering woes The heart slowing down, the lips growing white The heart played its music; a beat or two Then I heard no more, I heard no more (Painting used: On the Wire by Hervey Thomas Dunn, 1918)
